On September 28, 2024, the Diocese of Suratthani in Southern Thailand witnessed a historic and joyous occasion: The Episcopal Ordination of Bishop Paul Trairong Multree. St. Raphael’s Cathedral, the spiritual heart of the diocese, was filled with faithful, clergy, and dignitaries who gathered to welcome their new shepherd. Bishop Trairong Multree’s appointment marks a new chapter in the life of the diocese, which spans over a vast territory in a region predominantly Buddhist and Muslim.
During the ordination Mass, Bishop Multree shared his vision for his new role, choosing the motto “Go and preach” (Matthew 28:19). Bishop Multree’s journey to episcopal leadership began with his appointment by Pope Francis on July 8, 2024, following the retirement of Bishop Joseph Prathan Sridarunsil. Bishop Multree brings with him a wealth of experience, having served in various roles including as a Missionary in Cambodia, rector of the Thai Missionary Society’s Major Seminary, and National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies. The ordination, presided over by outgoing Bishop Sridarunsil and attended by notable figures such as Archbishop Emeritus Francis Xavier Kriengsak Kovithavanij and the Apostolic Nuncio to Thailand, Archbishop Peter Bryan Wells, was a solemn and uplifting ceremony. The celebration brought together both Thai faithful and international visitors, including friends from Italy, where Bishop Multree had studied pastoral liturgy
